F&O Turnover Calculator for Tax Audit
F&O turnover for income tax is not the value of your contracts — it is the sum of your absolute profits and losses. Getting this wrong is what makes traders think they have crossed the audit threshold when they have not. Enter your trades to compute turnover correctly.

Enter the profit or loss of each trade — profits as positive, losses as negative. Turnover is the sum of the absolute values, not the net.
Turnover is under ₹2 crore. No audit applies on turnover alone, but one can still be triggered under Section 44AD if you declare profit below the presumptive rate while your total income exceeds the basic exemption limit.
How to use this F&O turnover calculator
- Open your broker's P&L statement for the financial year — every major broker exports one.
- Enter each trade's result: profits as positive numbers, losses as negative.
- Add rows as needed with the Add trade button.
The calculator returns your turnover for income tax, your net P&L, and where you sit relative to the Section 44AB audit thresholds.
Worked example
| Trade | Result | Adds to turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty futures | +₹45,000 | ₹45,000 |
| Bank Nifty options | −₹28,000 | ₹28,000 |
| Nifty options | +₹17,500 | ₹17,500 |
| Net P&L | +₹34,500 | |
| Turnover | ₹90,500 |
The turnover is ₹90,500, not ₹34,500 and not the contract value of the positions — which for three index lots would have run into crores. Traders who assume turnover means contract value routinely believe they need an audit when they do not.
How F&O turnover is calculated
Turnover = Σ |profit or loss on each trade|This is the single most misunderstood number in trader taxation. F&O turnover is not the value of the contracts you traded. A trader who buys and sells ₹50 lakh of Nifty futures twenty times has not done ₹10 crore of turnover for tax purposes.
A ₹40,000 profit and a ₹25,000 loss produce ₹65,000 of turnover — not ₹15,000 net, and not the contract value. Losses add to turnover exactly as profits do, because it is a measure of activity, not of income. Per the ICAI guidance note, premium received on options sold is no longer added separately.
When a tax audit applies
- Turnover above ₹10 crore — audit under Section 44AB.
- ₹2 crore to ₹10 crore — no audit, as long as at least 95% of receipts and payments are digital. For exchange trading they are.
- Under ₹2 crore — no audit on turnover, but Section 44AD can still trigger one if you declare profit below the presumptive rate and your total income is above the basic exemption limit.
F&O income is business income
F&O is treated as non-speculative business income and is filed in ITR-3. That has real advantages: you can deduct related expenses such as brokerage, internet, advisory fees and depreciation on equipment, and losses can be carried forward for eight years — but only if the return is filed before the due date. Intraday equity, by contrast, is speculative business income and carries forward for only four.
Keep the trade-level record
This calculation needs per-trade results, which is exactly what your broker's P&L statement and a journal give you. Reconstructing it in July from memory is how people end up guessing at a number they have to sign.
Thresholds and rules change between budgets. This is a calculation aid, not tax advice — confirm your position with a chartered accountant before filing.
